South Cardamom Conservation for Development Program, Koh Kong Cambodia

From 2008-2010 Ahti Westphal lived and worked in Cambodia with Selin Maner Architects, Wildlife Alliance, and the Cambodian Government as a project architect and field coordinator. This work consisted of master planning and providing architectural design and field research for scores of buildings and sites for the South Cardamom Conservation for Development program (SCCD). Spanning over four hundred thousand hectares in land area the SCCD project is a launching pad for a new national park system in the South Cardamom Mountains of Cambodia, an area that has been facing intense deforestation and poaching for the past three decades. The South Cardamom Mountains is one of the largest contiguous pieces of rainforest remaining in Southeast Asia that meets the United Nations REDD Programme grade A canopy requirements for carbon sequestration.

Pictured above are images of the cardamom mountain visitor center under construction in the Koh Kong town of Tatai designed by Selin Maner Architects Cambodia. Estimated to open in the beginning of 2012 the eight-hundred square meter visitor center will house the first public natural science exhibition center in the area. The exhibitions will address the complexity of the south cardamom mountain environment and promote awareness of the importance of ecosystem preservation in the region.

Water Project Competition, Oslo, New Opera House, Norway

Designed in collaboration with the artist Rolf Westpal (my father)

“The opera house as an International landmark work of architecture which touches the sea is within its own realm a very powerful and elegant statement. We envision a least intrusive visual statement that will provide an active, passive, kinetic and seasonal phenomenological aspect with which an audience located at the opera house and or the surrounding area may choose to interact with.

A moving vertical element at sea informed humans on land that other people were close at hand. A stave set in the earth and forgotten by an ancient individual and then seen by a subsequent traveler communicated that a previous person had passed on the same route.

A vertical line from sky to submergence under the sea dissected by the horizontal line of earth forms the most ancient concept of a cross, axis, destination or focal point. The never ending ballet of wind, waves, tide, ice, snow and rain will become the paramour of our installation. Exterior treatment with a passive light refracting/emitting surface will allow the viewer to experience the object throughout the seasons during day or night. The objects gentle movement and the shadow it casts from summer to winter will impart a daily sense of time and season.”

The new Koochiching County Museum, Northern Minnesota. Over the years I have donated design time to the Koochiching County Museum to expand their operation and dream of a new home. This work consisted of a few renderings based on a preliminary schematic designs for a new Koochiching Museum Building. The purpose of these schematics is to act as visual tools in raising money for a new museum. The new museum would showcase the history of the logging and paper industries in Northern Minnesota as well as many local inventions such as the snow mobile, the outboard motor, and the pontoon platforms now used on most sea planes. Native American artifacts and architecture particularly from the Ojibwa and Cree tribes will be permanent exhibitions in the new museum. The facade is comprised of a glass system that is coated with light diffraction grating. In the cold and dark winters with temperatures often dipping down to -40 F the vivid colors of the facade will brighten the lives of the local people.

The clients brief for the outhouse consisted of three points. The building needed to be integrated into the landscape, it should be environmentally respectful and sensitive to the site where it is built, and that it should be part of the greater vernacular architectural language of the area. The design responds with a unique dual vaulted composting system that is rotated from one side to the other year after year. The building holds a high and prominent position on the property commanding a beautiful view of Rainy Lake. The mottled textures of the aged pine siding boards were hand selected from a local sawyer’s stock pile to match the hues of the surrounding rock and vegetation. The interiors are paneled in light and richly knotted bass wood. Little odor is present as a steady breeze carries the smell pine and juniper through the screened walls. Once a year the compost is simply hauled out in front of the building with a shovel to feed a vivid community of lichens, ferns, and moss.

A black stairway enables the client to reach the outhouse. It spans across a small valley in the terrain infested with moss, juniper, and wildflowers. Laminated beams are fabricated on site and touch the earth lightly. The angle of approach is carefully directed to create the visual effect of flotation. The railing supports are tapered to shed water and everything is held off of the ground to increase the elements lifespan. The stair weaves the traveler through a canopy of young poplar trees at an angle which accommodates even the most elderly limbs. As well as preventing rot, the blackened treatment of beams and railing instigate an aesthetic conversation with the dappled and darkened environs of the forest floor.

Above the outhouse a handmade bench is positioned on a high point of the rock island commanding a grand view of Rainy Lake. A place to sit in morning contemplation with coffee or tea. Research of Japanese and Scandinavian wood working techniques are employed in the construction. The materials were selected for their ability to camouflage or integrate into the surroundings. The bench makes its presence known to boaters when they pass by at an appropriate angle when the suns light glimmers from the polished copper caps. These caps prevent moisture from being absorbed by the end grain of the logs which eventually leads to rot.

The client wanted a “temple in the forest”, where he could quietly work. The building had to be expressive of the area’s past, the designer’s ability, and the client’s needs. Vernacular architecture is invoked in the horizontal siding with red reveals echoing and intensifying the chinking used in older log dwellings. The application of cedar slabs to the door departs from the rectilinearity of the siding in attempt to acknowledge the utilitarian and often organic architecture of Native Americans, loggers, and naturalists. There are two porches on the east and west facades designated for the arrival and departure of the sun. The eastern porch is surrounded with a screen of rough pine boards similar to the way a horse stall is constructed. This area provides a place to stack fire wood out of the elements and a reveal is left open at the bottom to allow the decks to be swept clear of bark. Windows are precisely located according to work habits and a view to the Northeast sky from the sleeping area accommodated via a band of windows beneath the eaves. The client can fall into sleep while watching the aurora borealis or awaken to the site of deer grazing out in the southern brush. Poetic events like this are not subservient to function but rather seek to join the romantic and the useful.

Water Tower Competition, Chicago Illinois

A landmark sculpture was conceived for an old water tower in downtown Chicago. A ghostly construction of crystals and stainless steel rods was proposed to be retrofitted to an old steel water tower. By day the structure would reflect the suns light, evoking evaporation of the former contents of the vessel. By night the crystal cloud would be illuminated from below.

From 2004-2008 Ahti Westphal worked for the renowned American artist and architect Maya Lin and was directly involved in nearly every project that came through the office during that time. The Museum of Chinese in the Americas or M.O.C.A. is one example of an architectural project that Westphal worked on with Maya Lin focusing on schematic design and design development, and detailing. The Community Based Eco-Tourism Office, otherwise known as CBET, is a joint venture between Wildlife Alliance and the community of Chi Phat, Cambodia. This recently completed 500-square-metre building is one of the first examples of a bamboo structure in Cambodia that elevates the material to its full capacity. The raw material was harvested directly from the village and over a two year time span community members soaked the bamboo in water with minerals to increase its durability. Site assessment, measurement, planning, and building design was done gratis by Ahti Westphal and Selin Maner Architects Cambodia in accordance with programmatic requirements established by the community. Bamboo engineering, construction demonstrations and expertise was provided Jorg Stamm. The project was built by the community of Chi Phat and through their hard work CBET was able to create a beautiful and sustainable headquarters that will support future Eco-tourism in the area.

The people of Tramung Chrum village are part of an ethnic minority in Cambodia called the Imam San Cham. During the years of the Democratic Republic of Kampuchea the Cham were heavily persecuted for their unique beliefs and have since been marginalized within the greater Cambodian Diaspora. Ahti Westphal has been working with the people of Tramung Chrum to design and build a group of utilitarian shade houses made from bamboo to contain simple gravity feed drip irrigation systems. These structures aim to improve the capacity of the village to grow larger volumes and wider varieties of organic vegetables. By working with the community of Tramung Chrum to create thoughtful pragmatic architecture, the community can broaden their nutrition base, increase their self-sufficiency, expand their agricultural knowledge, and elevate their economic stature. This project is ongoing and has been jointly funded by the Harpswell Foundation and individual fund-raising efforts taken by the designer.
